Biography

After a BEng in Electronics with Music at Glasgow University and an MA in Sonic Arts at Queen’s University Belfast, Johnny returned to engineering and embarked on a PhD back at Glasgow with Nikolaj Gadegaard. His PhD focused on injection moulding nanostructures primarily to research their effects on stem cell behaviour. After this he worked with Kelvin Nanotechnology on many commercial and research projects before taking a break to explore other career options. Enlightened but uncommitted, he recently returned to work with Nikolaj on a project integrating nanoscale injection moulding with other advanced manufacturing processes for commercial sensor applications.

Injection moulding nanostructures: from surfaces to devices

This talk will describe the development of injection moulding processes for the replication of adventurous nanostructures. It will describe the initial motivation to make larger quantities of substrates for biological experiments in cellular mechanotransduction, the development of new tooling to facilitate new experiments in this field and the discoveries which these developments have enabled.
It will then explore the future of these patterning techniques, not only in biomedical research, but also their integration into advanced manufacturing processes for low cost sensing technologies and other applications.
