Jaume Caro | Eurecat – CTM

Head of Surface and Coating Technology of the Metal and Ceramic Materials Department

Biography

The holder of a PhD in Physics from the University of Barcelona, Jaume Caro has pursued a professional career in designing, implementing and coordinating R&D&I projects in the field of surface coatings and technology. He is currently the head of Surface and Coating Technology in Eurecat’s Metal and Ceramic Materials Department, where he has led and participated in various industrial projects related to the development and characterisation of coatings obtained by vacuum evaporation techniques (PVD, CVD) for their application in metal and mechanical sectors (hard, protective and low-friction coatings), as well as the chemical, biomedical, energy, decorative or other industries.

Presentation: Surfaces of the future: the fundamentals can be superficial

The use of a material for a particular industrial application often depends on the functional characteristics of its surface. In many cases, it is technically or financially impossible to manufacture a 3D material with a certain surface functionality. In these cases, surface engineering, based on the application of specific surface coatings and treatments (surface activation, ion implantation, etc.), is the only possible way to bestow the surface of a material with certain physical or chemical properties. This presentation will review the current state of surface technology and point to new developments that will transform society.
